Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, located using reconnaissance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was situated in mountains just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a number of access tunnels providing entry to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the attack conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as ISIS - enforced militant control over significant areas in Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action underscores the UK's leading role, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to stamp out any resurgence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

RAF aircraft have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of IS following its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank every member of the UK armed forces who took part in this operation for their professionalism and their valour," the Defence Secretary commented. "Including them were a great many UK service members deployed over the festive period. This action, to remove terrorist threats who threaten our way of life, highlights how our armed forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, protecting the UK at home and powerful internationally."

Last December, the United States armed forces executed what it called a "large-scale strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an assault claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. estimates Daesh still has between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
